Hi all,
Well, speaking of math, I wasn't good at it either. I got a little better when I got an abacus, but math never was, and never will be my strong suit, even though it's a necessary part of life. I always thought decimals and fractions were weird. I was ok with whole numbers, but decimals and fractions will to me, allways be, weird.

...abacus... Wow! WonderWoman I haven't heard that term in ages... ThankYou for bringing back into me thots learning of a time seemingly ... ... long ago ... FRACTIONS you say: Think of a chEEseburger. Take One and cut it in HALF then EACH half in half...that gives you QUARTERS. 4 Quarters to 1 whole/Complete chEEseburger. *smile with a giggle* CG here. {Connie}
I've always been told the pie is the best example of fractions. That's why they make pie charts. I could just see a math nerd at the thanksgiving table. "Mom, hand me 1/16 of that pumpkin pie!" LOL! I'm v.i. so I never used an abacus, but I did drive a lot of people crazy with a talking calculator. I had one that even spoke nine languages! Fractions and decimels were ok, but everything after that like algebra sucked donkey dink! I'm so so so glad that I can choose when I'll take a math class now that I'm a college student instead of having to like in high school and before!
Well when I was in high school, I think my teacher would've considered a calculator cheating. Yeah, Algebra is horrible, all that x plus x equals this or that.
Hi Connie, well glad I could bring back a memory for you. I still have that abacus somewhere, and the instruction book that went with it. You are suppose to even be able to use it as a calender, but I found it hard. Anyway, glad I could bring back an old memory, hope it was a good one.

If Math was a person, I would be in jail right now, for murdering him/her. Lol! That's how much I hate Math! In elementary school, I totally didn't get it, I'd just fallen off the bandwagon. Then in fifth grade, I got some help with it from some more people, and things started to slip into place. Everything rolled along okay, with a lot of worrying and studying, but more or less succeeding with okay grades. But now I'm in Geometry and I'm literally getting D's and F's in everything. I hate it. Lol! And I study sooo much and worry all the time lol! Anyway, the long and short of it is that I'm auditing the class this year and redoing it next year to pass, because I woulda gotten a D in it first quarter and they didn't want it soaking up my GPA. So yeah. Lol. Frown.
Caitlin
P.S. Never used an abacus, but they look/feel cool! And love talking calculators, and my BrailleNote Calculator too!
yes, abacuses are nice, better than doing it all in your head, but it still takes a bit of learning to work with one.
If Math were a person, especially if he were a man, he'd say, I'm going to make your life sooo miserable, making you depressed and miserable is my sole aim in life, what I live for, lol.

...maybe a STEAKburger with like fryed onions and a Heaping {how many that is I dunno, you know, a Heaping, ALOT *smile*} anyways with a Heaping of tators/French Fries/American Fries/ or maybe just One Baked Potatoe on the side, OR... maybe Two if a Big Guy... never know....*smile* ...Connie
Hehehehheehe smile.

Considering how much I hate math, I'm amazed I understand it as well as I do. Well, understood... other blindies were always coming to me for help with algebra a couple summers ago when I took an algebra class with other blindies. I got algebra, I actually enjoyed it sometimes. Now I'm in statistics... people, if you can avoid it, avoid it! Stats is horrible! Take algebra if you must, but don't take stats unless you have to!! Oh yeah, geometry's not fun either...
Yeah Algebra's okay. We had a couple of those problems in our homework for Geometry last night, and I got them right off. Hooray, I was so proud ... makes a change for me, to get something right off the bat in Geometry...
Test tomorrow, oh beep beep ...
Caitlin
P.S. Tyr, you're just like ol' Doodgeman ...
I did the algebra,, statistics and advanced statistics in college. I'm not a huge fan of math but it's really quite a beautiful subject and if you mastser it you can get a lot of well paid very cool jobs and you can use your math to invent computers, gsp location systems and tons of other very amazing and cool technologies to better people's lives. It's fine if you don't because you use your skills to help peole the best you can, I e.g. hate Gnelish and writing and such and I'd need someone to e.g. write about an invention I made (were I to make one) and explain it and make it look interesting. I'm hoping my math will come in useful with my pgoramming skills and Electrical Engineering research one day. I designed and programmed a talking compass out of $30 worth of microprocessor and measuring devices and it worked really well and was really cool, I want to do more of that stuff some time. So, don't bash math just because it's hard, it's a very amazing subject indeed.
And don't be intimidated by it, it seems a lot harder and scarier than it is, if you sit down and try to enjoy it, have some chocolate or your favorite music or whatever makes you enjoy problem solving, and then just read and test and try to prove stuff, it's amazing once you get over being afraid of math how easy it can become. :)
Pi is cool, it's one of the two most important numbers in math, the other one is "E" by which I am not referring textacy, you college math f0lks should know what E stands for <grin>.
cheers

Oh, if that is the case, having something enJOYable will help me better in Math Understanding... I should like to have 1/16 slice of that Pumpkin Pie that has been served here in this gathering of folks given to Math Consider... *smile* ...CG
Hi, well, I really hate math. Im in this advanced algebra class right now and its horrible! Since i have a Braille Lite, i can use the calculator thats built into it whenever i want, so the teacher doesnt even know im using it, which is great since im completely lost in that class.
i really dont see where im gonna use half this stuff in the real world, except if i'd be an accountant. Is there any other jobs where algebra is used, or am i just crazy?
Well, I think a lot of it is used in complicated electronics. I had a small taste of it when I was studying for my amateurradio license, that's where I was introduced to ohms' law. That's where you're trying to find out the amount of voltage flowing through a circuit, and e represents the voltag, I represents the amount of amps or miliamps, r represents the amount of resistance in ohms. You had to do the formula, e equals i times r, and you could use it to find the amount of current, or the amount of resistance, but I won't go in to it further, since it's been a long time since I studied all that, and I've forgotten most of it. I just studied the barest amount I had to to pass my license tests, but it got rather heavily involved. I could do the simplest of it, but when it got into the really complex stuff, no way.

I try not to dislike Math, and I realize it's a good subject. I don't mind simple Algebra, but I don't like Geometry and I doubt I ever will. By the way, I am literally going to wig out about the stupid test tomorrow. i don't know what to study and my tutor's coming tonight ot help, but i don't know what good that will do me if I don't know what to study. My tutor is awesome, though; she's a great friend and person and she'sin advanced Trig her senior year, to give you an idea of what a genius she is. She's in National Honors Society too, and lots of other academic stuff. It is soooo amazing lol! But I digress ... By the way WIldebrew, that compass sounds tight!
Caitlin
Niblet,
Actually you don't use algebra much in accounting, it's essentially just simplepercentages for the most part, no advanced math in that class.
You use math for all engineering stuff (desining air planes, building bridges, houses, cars, engines), for any academic research (are blind people more scared of certain noises than sighted people for insstance, if do a survey of 200 or 300 people but you must use statistics to decide if the responses from your survey constitute something that holds true for people in general) you use it for programming (not necessarily, sometimes you do, depends on the type of stuff you ar writing), you use algebra and math when running business optimally, if I seell at this price how many people will by from me, vs if I sell at a higher price, I make more money per item sold but less people will probably buy it because it's more expensive, what is the optimal price so that I make as much money of the product as possible, you can find this out using algebra. I mean, you use math and algebra a lot more than you think, it's a big part of so many careers and it's not that bad. Schools make it often harder than it is in real life, in my short experience of real life, but you'll be thankful you can apply it when the time comes. You'll appreciate it later .. I know this for a fact.
good luck

...Whew! WonderWoman, If that is the simple stuff... oh my goodness! the complicated ... ... hmm now, I already forgets... You mean what you just said was of not complicated... Not to me!...VERRY COMPLICATED to me... Maybe another slice of that 1/16th pumpkin pie... Let me think 16 slices of pie minus 3 slices and that leaves ahh ... that leaves 13 slices... Anyone for a 1/16th slice of pie... *smile* CG here
I know what you mean cg, if that was simple, I'd hate to hear complicated, lol, enough to make my head spin.

...enough to make someone wonder how long till the next chEEseburger weekend starts. *smile* ...Connie here
I stunk at math and still do. I never got the proper tutoring when requested. When I took the math test at the university (all that perping served me good.) I did much better. Now if I move and have to take the test again I'll be preping up for the test, again.
Math is evil! If I could drop this class I would.. And don't even go into the abacus. A calculator with 9 languages would be nice though!
Yeah, math's not my cup of tea. I manage to maintain a good grade in it. I got a really good score in seventh grade, one of the top people of that test. That was prealgebra, but now, since it's my second year of algebra, and this teacher doesn't talk marshan, I am fine for the moment. I get math, and it's fairly easy. Doing it right now, as we post here. So, hate it! I am more in to English, and studying of the Language.
I am not very good at math. I am taking algebra 1 right now and currently we are graphing inequalities on the braillewriter.
i. hate. math. i have to take rimedial math sometime this year. It's something like, statistics to graduate I think. I'm so going to dred it.
I'll be taking a math class in the fall. oh god, this is going to be a torturous class, even if it is remedial stuff.
I hope you'll do okay. Good luck!
